Speaker Bios:
- Allison Lenkeit Meezan teaches Geography and Geospatial Technology at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Allison teaches numerous courses online and hybrid, including the first completely online Physical science laboratory science course at Foothill, a GIS computer lab course, and social science lecture courses. Allison co-facilitates her campus’ local Peer Online Course Review (POCR) and is an advocate for online teaching that matches or exceeds the quality of traditional face to face teaching. Allison holds a BS in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford University and an MPhil in Geography from Cambridge University.
- Ron Herman is Chair of the Photography Department at Foothill College, where he empowers students through innovative visual storytelling projects. He has received numerous awards and honors, including a Fulbright and EPIC Fellowship at Stanford University. He has photographed for Polo Ralph Lauren and Spiegel, and his work is included in such collections as the Fototeca de Cuba, Kinsey Institute, Snite Museum, and the South Bend Museum of Art. A popular speaker, Herman has lectured on digital imaging technologies at Cornell, Stanford, and Yale Universities. Herman holds a BFA from University of Cincinnati and MFA from University of Notre Dame.
- Alexis Aguilar teaches Geography and Geospatial Science at Foothill College. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Irvine, an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Missoula in Montana, and a Ph.D. in Geography from UCLA. He has been teaching fully online courses since 2014. He believes in the power of spatial data and analysis to help students understand the world’s problems and visualize their solutions.

Project based learning and multimedia presentations are a major tool to infuse equity based assessments into classes. ArcGIS Story Maps allow students to demonstrate learning through multiple modes, collaborate on projects and integrate spatial data into digital presentations. This panel discussion will introduce the ArcGIS Storymap tool, and highlight different ways it is used in summative assessments and as a teaching tool in online courses in Photography, Geography and Geospatial Technology at Foothill College. (ArcGIS is a premium tool that requires a site license and is currently used at select California Community colleges. Colleges within the California Community College system can purchase their own site license through a purchase agreement with the CCC Chancellor’s office. Attendees are encouraged to check to see if their institution has one.)

- Explain how ArcGIS Story Maps can be used in online classes to engage students in project based assessments.
- Describe how Story Maps and ArcGIS Online maps can be used as a collaborative teaching and learning tool in online classes.
- Discuss the applications of Story Maps as a tool to integrate spatial data and multimedia into student presentations and as a dynamic online teaching resource in multiple disciplines.
