Assessments offer more than opportunities to measure student learning. They also have the potential to send cues of belonging and cultivate meaningful connections between your course content and your students’ lives. In this workshop, you will hack the Canvas gradebook through the use of Mastery Pathways to allow students voice and choice in their assessment journey, and explore culturally responsive assessment ideas that harness the opportunities of mobile devices. When your students are no longer confined to a classroom, why should their learning be tied to a desk and one-size-fits-all assessments?

Who should attend?

  • Equity-minded online educators teaching asynchronous online courses designed in Canvas.
  • Equity-minded online educators interested in exploring ungrading design in Canvas.

Outcomes:

  1. Utilize Canvas Mastery Paths to establish learner choice-centric assessment pathways.
  2. Apply mobile design principles to make Canvas assessments mobile-friendly.
  3. Identify actionable approaches to integrate culturally responsive approaches to assessments that create welcoming and inclusive learning environments.
