Accessibility Evaluation Tools for Canvas Courses

Thursday June 18th, 2020 at 11:00 am - 11:50 am

Presenter: Shawn Jordison

Description: Accessibility in Canvas can be evaluated in a multitude of ways. Automated tools can offer a starting point by which to check for basic accessibility errors. Each tool has pros and cons and while no automated checker can identify all accessibility issues, using these solutions in conjunction with manual checks can help scan for existing accessibility errors. The tools that were evaluated for this presentation are the Accessibility Checker in the Canvas Editor, the UDOIT tool, the WAVE toolbar, and the Pope Tech accessibility LTI tool. Common accessibility elements evaluated include: color contrast, use of headings, use of lists, properly formatted hyperlinks, alternate text for images, and table headers. If you are developing course content then you need to be aware of the capabilities and limitations of using such tools to properly test your Canvas course for accessibility.
