Instead of just transferring a face-to-face class to an online format, we can use online tools to create a more effective learning experience by applying gaming strategies and competency based grading to our online course. As in an online game, we can create engaging levels that need to be mastered before a student can move on to the next level. In this session, we will examine how this approach was used in an argumentation class complete with a back story of starting as an Intern to the White House and advancing to Chief of Staff by demonstrating the skills needed to reach the class objectives. We will look at the Canvas tools that allow anyone to transform their class into an online game to create an engaging learning experience.
