The CVC-OEI created Canvas Course Shells for over 35 OER texts. These shells were based upon the rubric developed by CCC faculty for effective online pedagogy and contained the open textbook embedded into the shell. Cabrillo College specifically requested four of the shells. In this session, Barbara Illowsky will explain about the shells and the background. Aloha Sargent will share how she worked with her Cabrillo faculty to adapt and modify the shells to meet their individual needs.
These shells are being adopted by community colleges and universities around the country. Adopting OER is valuable for students who experience hunger, homelessness and other financial challenges. We want to keep them in school and assist them in achieving their educational goals. This is an equity issue that faculty in which faculty can participate in the solution. For part of the session, faculty who bring their laptops and/or tablets will work together to modify a shell in real time.
• Import canvas shells from Canvas Commons.
• Modify and adapt pre-made shells to suit their needs.
• Search and find Open Educational Resources for their courses.
