Why did we design a summer certification? Faculty are often inundated with grading and other obligations during the semester, so it’s difficult to complete significant professional development while teaching. Previous multi-week online certifications (6-9 weeks) were resulting in a significant number of faculty not completing the certification. To accommodate more instructors and meet the needs of online teacher certifications, the distance education team decided to offer summer certifications to meet the needs of faculty. Largely, the process was very helpful for faculty, and we increased the number of faculty finishers significantly. We created an accelerated-hybrid format, which shortened the time to two-weeks and included a single day of face-to-face instruction. Participants had access to both the distance education coordinator and the instructional designer. After participants submit their final artifacts for certification, the distance education coordinator and instructional designer implemented a two-step approval process. Over our first summer, we held three separate two-week sessions, resulting in over 25 newly certified faculty; including some scheduled to teach in the upcoming fall semester.
• At the end of this session, participants will be able to propose an accelerated online certification on their own campus.
• At the end of this session, participants will be able to avoid some issues that Clovis dealt with.
