    We are pleased to announce pre-conference workshops designed to compliment the OTC'16 program. With input from attendee feedback,
    these workshops were selected provide hands-on opportunities for exploring leading-edge teaching and learning skills and strategies.

    Workshops will be held Wednesday, June 15th at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina for an additional fee. Please see individual descriptions.
    Workshops run concurrently. To prevent schedule conflicts, choose one of the two options:

    Option 1 - one morning workshop and/or one afternoon workshop
    Option 2 - one full day workshop

    Full-day Workshops

    Introduction to Teaching with Canvas
    Instructor: @ONE
    (9:00am - 4:00pm)

    This workshop will introduce participants to teaching using the Canvas learning management system by Instructure. During the workshop, participants will learn how the system works through a series of guided hands-on practice activities. By the end of the workshop , participants will be able to use Canvas to: facilitate contact between students and faculty using communication tools, communicate expectations using the online syllabus tool, encourage active learning by presenting content and assignments in a variety of formats, create a course home page that will help students easily navigate and access course content, and give prompt feedback through the use of the speed grader.

    Course Improvement: Remodel, Design, Retrofit

    Whether you’re redesigning a new course or remodeling an older course, smart design can help you build a better experience for both you and your students. In this one day workshop, we’ll tackle designing, remodeling and retrofitting courses by focusing on three keys to smart design: building a strong foundation to your course from the principles of universal design that support optimum accessibility; designing useful spaces that take advantage of CMS features and tools; and enhancing student engagement and course navigation through the use of graphics built with free online tools.

    Creating Videos for Your Online Course
    Instructor: Donna Eyestone
    (9:00am - 4:00pm)

    In this workshop you’ll make a short video that contains both you speaking directly to your students, and a “screen recording” video to show them how to do something on the computer. You’ll learn simple tips that can make your videos look and sound more professional, while decreasing the time required to make them! We’ll use Screencast-o-matic (free download) and your webcam or phone to record video clips, then upload to YouTube and edit these clips, add titles, transitions, and more.  Easily add captions and then embed the video right into your online course.

    Bring Your Own Laptop (Mac or PC) AND any one of the following:
    • video camera or
    • built-in or USB webcam (with cable to connect to your laptop) or
    • mobile phone that shoots video (and your connector cable!)

    Advanced iPad Classroom
    Instructor: Sabba Quidwai
    (9:00am – 12 noon)

    In this hands-on, intensive, workshop, participants will explore advanced topics in classroom iPad integration such as App Fluency, App Smashing, curation, and collaboration. Advanced workflow strategies will be covered as well the creation of student portfolios, multi-app combination scenarios to create new multimedia content, and publishing content to the web. Participants will be given hands-on time to explore, practice and refine their skills throughout the workshop.

    Google for Education

    Google Apps and Chrome Extensions provide creative and collaborative learning opportunities for laptop, desktop, Chromebook and classrooms. Learn some of the best uses of Google Drive Add-Ons and explore helpful Chrome apps and extensions. Among the tools featured are Kaizena, VideoNotes, Screencastify, MoveNote, SnagIt and others. Examine how educators make the most of tools that extend Google capabilities and plan effectively for integration strategies.
