Introduction to Teaching with Canvas Instructor: @ONE (9:00am – 4:00pm)This workshop will introduce participants to teaching using the Canvas learning management system by Instructure. During the workshop, participants will learn how the system works through a series of guided hands-on practice activities. By the end of the workshop , participants will be able to use Canvas to: facilitate contact between students and faculty using communication tools, communicate expectations using the online syllabus tool, encourage active learning by presenting content and assignments in a variety of formats, create a course home page that will help students easily navigate and access course content, and give prompt feedback through the use of the speed grader. Creating Videos for Your Online Course Instructor: @ONE (9:00am – 4:00pm)In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create meaningful videos for your online course. Through organizing objectives and critical concepts, you’ll outline key elements to help construct a script and storyboard. You’ll learn Screencast-O-Matic and YouTube essentials to get started towards producing better content. Worried about accessibility? Great Online Teachers Seminar Facilitated by Michelle Pacansky-Brock, Ed.D. (@brocansky) (9:00am – 4:00pm)Since the 1960s, the National Great Teachers Movement has inspired thousands of educators. Great Teachers Seminars (GTS) are unique from traditional workshops and conference sessions, as they places you — the great teacher — at the center of each moment.This event will leverage the concept of a GTS, but with a twist! As an online instructor, you understand that online teaching is unique from face-to-face teaching. And, as such, you need dedicated time to share, listen, and discuss the opportunities and challenges that come along with online teaching and learning. This workshop will provide a brief overview of what copyright is and to whom it applies; introduce you to aspects of copyright law that have implications for faculty and instructional designers; explain creative commons licensing; and provide you with resources for creating your own instructional media. Developing Online Collaboration Tools for Designing Career Paths Instructors: Joseph Parente, Professor, Communication Studies, California State University – Sacramento Christopher J. Sinnott, Assoc. Professor, Technical Theatre and Design Scenic Designer, Palomar College (1:00pm – 4:00pm)Come and see why Chancellor Oakley is excited about the $150 million grant funded Pathways Program, (video). Career pathways are necessary to educate students to develop industry standard skills in their chosen field. We will be exploring Arts, Media, and Entertainment online collaboration tools for helping students develop skills in media production by using industry standards as a model for helping young people learn and practice these exciting crafts. We will be applying this model to use in designing other career pathways. The need for such programs is critical for helping learners of all ages (many of them underserved and from low socioeconomic backgrounds) find meaning and purpose in education – through the non-threatening, success-oriented vehicle of Arts, Media, and Entertainment.
